Description
Air Fryer Crispy Onions are a quick and healthier version of the classic deep-fried onions, perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. They’re great as a snack, topping for burgers, or as a side dish.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced into rings
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp olive oil or cooking spray
Instructions
- Soak the sliced onions in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes to help the coating adhere better.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- In another bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs.
- Take each onion ring from the buttermilk and dredge it in the flour mixture, then dip it into the panko breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to ensure they stick.
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush with olive oil.
- Place the coated onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Make sure they are not overlapping.
- Air fry for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
- Remove from the air fryer and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy as a snack, side dish, or topping for your favorite meals.
Notes
- If you prefer a spicier flavor, add cayenne pepper to the flour mixture.
- For an even crispier texture, you can spray a little more cooking spray on the onions halfway through the cooking process.
- These onions are best served immediately for maximum crispiness, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
