Description

Bangers and Mash with Onion Gravy is a comforting British classic featuring juicy sausages served over creamy mashed potatoes and topped with rich, savory onion gravy. Perfect for a hearty family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 pork sausages (bangers)
  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (optional)

Instructions

  1. Boil the potatoes in salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender. Drain and mash with butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper, then set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the sausages for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate and keep warm.
  3. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook over medium-low heat for 8-10 minutes until softened and golden.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme (if using). Simmer for 5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  5. Return the sausages to the skillet and warm through in the gravy.
  6. Serve the sausages over mashed potatoes, generously spooning the onion gravy on top.

Notes

  • You can use chicken or vegetarian sausages as a substitute for pork sausages.
  • For creamier mash, add a splash of cream instead of milk.
  • This dish pairs perfectly with peas or roasted vegetables.
