Description

Bangers and Mash with Stout Onion Gravy is a hearty British classic featuring juicy sausages served over creamy mashed potatoes and topped with a rich, savory onion gravy made with stout beer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb pork sausages (traditional British bangers or your preferred variety)
  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup stout beer
  • 1/2 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Boil the potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  2. While the potatoes cook, heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat and cook sausages until browned and cooked through, about 15 minutes. Remove and keep warm.
  3. In the same pan, add sliced onions and sauté over medium heat until caramelized, about 10 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1–2 minutes to create a roux.
  5. Slowly pour in the stout beer, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Then add broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  6. Simmer the gravy for 8–10 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Serve sausages over mashed potatoes, generously topped with the stout onion gravy.

Notes

  • Use Irish-style pork sausages for a more traditional flavor.
  • Substitute plant-based sausages and broth for a vegetarian version.
  • For extra creamy mashed potatoes, add a splash of sour cream or cream cheese.
