Description
Classic Southern Coleslaw is a creamy, tangy side dish made with shredded cabbage and carrots tossed in a sweet and zesty mayo-based dressing. It’s a staple at barbecues, picnics, and Southern-style meals, offering a refreshing crunch that pairs perfectly with grilled meats and fried foods.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups green cabbage, finely shredded
- 1 cup purple cabbage, finely shredded (optional for color)
- 1 cup carrots, shredded
- 3/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard (or yellow mustard)
- 2 tbsp sugar (or honey)
- 1/4 tsp celery seed (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the green and purple cabbage with the shredded carrots.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, vinegar, mustard, sugar, celery seed, salt, and pepper until smooth.
- Pour the dressing over the cabbage mixture and toss until fully coated.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to let the flavors meld.
- Give it a quick toss before serving chilled.
Notes
- For a lighter version, substitute part of the mayo with plain Greek yogurt.
- Best made ahead—letting it chill enhances the flavor and texture.
- Add a splash of lemon juice for extra brightness.
