Description

Dark Chocolate Orange Shortbread Cookies are buttery, crumbly cookies infused with fresh orange zest and dipped or drizzled with rich dark chocolate. These elegant treats are perfect for the holidays or a citrusy twist on classic shortbread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 4 oz (115g) dark chocolate, chopped or chips (for dipping or drizzling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add vanilla extract and orange zest. Mix well.
  4. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
  5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters.
  6. Place cookies on the baking sheet and chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to help them hold their shape.
  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges just start to turn golden. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  8. Melt the dark chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.
  9. Dip half of each cookie in the melted chocolate or drizzle over the top. Let the chocolate set completely before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
  • You can freeze the dough for up to 3 months.
  • Sprinkle sea salt on the chocolate for extra flavor contrast.
  • Use orange extract for an even stronger citrus flavor.
