Description
Easy Sopapillas are a light, fluffy, and crispy fried pastry traditionally served with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of honey — a classic and simple Mexican dessert made with minimal ingredients.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons shortening or unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup warm water
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Powdered sugar or honey, for serving
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the shortening or butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the warm water gradually, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Cover the dough and let it rest for 20 minutes.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness, then cut into 3-inch squares or triangles.
- Heat oil in a deep skillet or saucepan to 375°F (190°C).
- Fry a few pieces at a time, turning once, until golden and puffed (about 1 minute per side).
- Drain on paper towels, then serve warm dusted with powdered sugar or drizzled with honey.
Notes
- Make sure the oil is hot enough — this helps the sopapillas puff properly.
- Serve immediately for the best texture.
- You can flavor the dough with a hint of cinnamon or vanilla extract for added depth.
