Filipino Picadillo is a hearty and flavorful ground beef stew simmered with potatoes, carrots, raisins, and savory seasonings. This comfort food classic is perfect with rice and combines sweet and savory elements for a delicious meal.

- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 medium potatoes, diced
- 1 medium carrot, diced
- 1/3 cup raisins
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon fish sauce (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup water
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion until translucent, then add garlic and cook until fragrant.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
- Stir in diced potatoes and carrots. Cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add raisins, soy sauce, tomato sauce, fish sauce (if using), black pepper, and water. Stir well to combine.
- Cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes, or until vegetables are tender and sauce has thickened. Stir occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with salt if needed. Serve hot over steamed rice.
Notes
- You can substitute ground beef with ground pork or chicken.
- For a lighter version, reduce the amount of oil and skip the raisins if preferred.
- This dish can be made ahead and tastes even better the next day.
- Great as a filling for empanadas or bread rolls too!
