Description

Filipino Picadillo is a hearty and flavorful ground beef stew simmered with potatoes, carrots, raisins, and savory seasonings. This comfort food classic is perfect with rice and combines sweet and savory elements for a delicious meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 medium potatoes, diced
  • 1 medium carrot, diced
  • 1/3 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion until translucent, then add garlic and cook until fragrant.
  2. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  3. Stir in diced potatoes and carrots. Cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add raisins, soy sauce, tomato sauce, fish sauce (if using), black pepper, and water. Stir well to combine.
  5. Cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes, or until vegetables are tender and sauce has thickened. Stir occasionally.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt if needed. Serve hot over steamed rice.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground pork or chicken.
  • For a lighter version, reduce the amount of oil and skip the raisins if preferred.
  • This dish can be made ahead and tastes even better the next day.
  • Great as a filling for empanadas or bread rolls too!
