Description
Filipino Picadillo is a savory and slightly sweet ground beef stew made with potatoes, carrots, and raisins in a tomato-based sauce. It’s a comforting dish commonly served over rice and loved for its balance of flavors.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 medium potato, diced
- 1 medium carrot, diced
- 1/3 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup frozen green peas (optional)
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup water or beef broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 bay leaf (optional)
- Cooked white rice, for serving
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions until translucent, about 3 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.
- Stir in soy sauce and tomato sauce. Add water or broth and bring to a simmer.
- Add diced potatoes, carrots, and bay leaf if using. Cover and simmer for 10–12 minutes, or until vegetables are tender.
- Stir in raisins and green peas (if using), and simmer for another 3–5 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove bay leaf before serving.
- Serve hot over steamed white rice.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use beef broth instead of water.
- Adjust sweetness by adding more or fewer raisins.
- You can also add bell peppers or substitute ground pork for beef.
- Leftovers taste even better the next day.
