- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom or cream of cheddar soup
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter, sliced into small pats
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or prepare heavy-duty foil if baking hobo-style.
- In a skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. Drain excess grease and set aside.
- In a small bowl, mix condensed soup with milk until smooth.
- Layer half the sliced potatoes on the bottom of the baking dish. Top with half the onions, half the cooked beef, and a few spoonfuls of the soup mixture. Repeat layers.
- Pour remaining soup mixture evenly over the top. Dot with butter.
- Cover tightly with foil and bake for 50–60 minutes, or until potatoes are fork-tender.
- Remove foil, sprinkle cheese on top, and bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes until melted and bubbly.
- Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.
Notes
- Use a mandoline to get evenly thin potato slices that cook more evenly.
- This dish can be prepped ahead and refrigerated before baking—just add 10 extra minutes to the bake time.
- For added flavor, substitute half the beef with ground sausage or add chopped bell peppers between the layers.
