Description
The Monte Cristo Sandwich is a rich and savory dish made with layers of ham, turkey, and cheese sandwiched between slices of bread, dipped in an egg batter, and cooked like French toast. Perfectly crispy on the outside and melty inside, it’s often served with powdered sugar and jam for a sweet and savory experience.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 slices of bread (white or brioche)
- 4 slices cooked ham
- 4 slices cooked turkey or chicken (optional)
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard (optional)
- 2 tbsp butter for cooking
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Jam (raspberry or strawberry) for serving
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Lay out 4 slices of bread and spread Dijon mustard on each if using.
- Layer each with a slice of Swiss cheese, ham, turkey (if using), cheddar cheese, and top with another slice of bread.
- Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides well.
- Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side or until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Remove from the skillet, dust with powdered sugar, and serve with jam on the side.
Notes
- For extra crunch, use day-old bread as it holds up better when dipped in the egg mixture.
- Try adding a sprinkle of herbs to the egg mixture for more flavor.
- Monte Cristo is best served immediately for the best texture and taste.
