Description

Mozzarella in Carrozza is a classic Italian comfort food featuring golden-fried sandwiches of gooey melted mozzarella between slices of soft bread—crispy on the outside, creamy and cheesy on the inside.


Ingredients

  • 8 slices white sandwich bread, crusts removed
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Place slices of mozzarella between two slices of bread to make 4 sandwiches. Press the edges together to seal.
  2. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.
  3. Place flour and breadcrumbs in two separate shallow bowls.
  4. Carefully dip each sandwich in flour, then in the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs. Press gently to adhere.
  5. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the sandwiches until golden brown and crisp, about 2–3 minutes per side.
  6. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve hot, optionally with marinara sauce on the side.

  • Use day-old bread for better structure during frying.
  • Seal edges well to prevent cheese leakage.
