Description
Mozzarella in Carrozza is a classic Italian comfort food featuring golden-fried sandwiches of gooey melted mozzarella between slices of soft bread—crispy on the outside, creamy and cheesy on the inside.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 slices white sandwich bread, crusts removed
- 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Place slices of mozzarella between two slices of bread to make 4 sandwiches. Press the edges together to seal.
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.
- Place flour and breadcrumbs in two separate shallow bowls.
- Carefully dip each sandwich in flour, then in the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs. Press gently to adhere.
- Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the sandwiches until golden brown and crisp, about 2–3 minutes per side.
- Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve hot, optionally with marinara sauce on the side.
Notes
- Use day-old bread for better structure during frying.
- Seal edges well to prevent cheese leakage.
- Try smoked mozzarella for a richer flavor.
- Serve as an appetizer or with a side salad for a light meal.
