Description

Qeema is a savory and flavorful minced meat dish, typically made with beef, chicken, or lamb, and cooked with a blend of aromatic spices. It’s a popular dish in South Asian cuisine, often served with naan, rice, or paratha.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) minced meat (beef, lamb, or chicken)
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp ground garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/2 cup yogurt (optional, for richness)
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
  • 1/2 cup water (as needed)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil or ghee in a large pan over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  2. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add the minced meat to the pan and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it browns and releases its juices.
  4. Stir in chopped tomatoes, green chilies, and all the ground spices (cumin, coriander, turmeric, garam masala, red chili powder, and salt). Cook for 5-7 minutes until the tomatoes soften and the oil begins to separate from the masala.
  5. If using, add yogurt to the mixture and cook for another 2-3 minutes until well combined.
  6. Add water as needed to achieve your desired consistency (some prefer it dry, while others like it with a little gravy). Stir and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  7. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with naan, rice, or paratha.

Notes

  • This dish can be made spicier by adding more green chilies or red chili powder.
  • For a richer version, add a little cream or butter at the end of cooking.
  • Qeema can be stored in the fridge for 2-3 days and reheats well.
