Description

Stuffed Cabbage Casserole is a comforting, hearty dish that combines the flavors of stuffed cabbage rolls in a convenient casserole form, with ground meat, rice, and cabbage, all baked in a rich tomato sauce.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground meat over medium heat until browned. Remove excess fat if necessary.
  3. Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in the cooked rice, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, sugar, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes to combine flavors.
  5. In the prepared baking dish, layer the chopped cabbage, then top with the meat mixture. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used.
  6. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese (if using). Bake uncovered for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
  • Serve with a side of sour cream or crusty bread for a complete meal.
  • If you prefer a spicier flavor, add red pepper flakes to the meat mixture.
