Description
Stuffed Cabbage Casserole is a comforting, hearty dish that combines the flavors of stuffed cabbage rolls in a convenient casserole form, with ground meat, rice, and cabbage, all baked in a rich tomato sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef or turkey
- 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
- 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large skillet, cook the ground meat over medium heat until browned. Remove excess fat if necessary.
- Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.
- Stir in the cooked rice, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, sugar, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes to combine flavors.
- In the prepared baking dish, layer the chopped cabbage, then top with the meat mixture. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese (if using). Bake uncovered for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a lighter version, use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
- Serve with a side of sour cream or crusty bread for a complete meal.
- If you prefer a spicier flavor, add red pepper flakes to the meat mixture.
