Description
Vanilla Custard Cream Squares are rich, creamy, and smooth. Layers of buttery pastry base, silky vanilla custard, and light whipped cream come together in this classic and indulgent dessert!

- 1 sheet puff pastry
- 2 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake puff pastry according to package instructions. Let it cool completely.
- Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, combine milk, sugar, and cornstarch. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.
- Reduce heat and cook for 2 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat.
- Slowly whisk a small amount of the hot mixture into the beaten yolks to temper them.
- Add the yolks back into the saucepan and cook 2 minutes more.
- Remove from heat and add vanilla extract. Chill in the refrigerator.
- Once cooled, spread vanilla custard over cooled puff pastry.
- Whip heavy cream and powdered sugar together until stiff peaks form, then spread on top of custard.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Cut into squares and serve chilled.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can fold in a bit of whipped cream into the chilled custard.
- Top with strawberries or raspberries for a fresh twist.
- Make sure the custard is completely cooled before adding the whipped cream.
